Dr. Ho Spirit of the Game Recipients
Two (2) anonymous families graciously sponsored two (2) $1,000 scholarships that are awarded annually to two (2) outstanding HSJGA junior to help subsidize the expense of tournament travel. The 2016 recipients are Lacey Uchida of Hilo and Noah Koshi of Pearl City!
This prestigious award is named in honor of the late Dr. Richard Ho, former HSJGA Board of Director, retired pediatrician, US Army Veteran and golf enthusiast who passed away peacefully in 2009. Dr. Ho served as an HSJGA Board of Director for over 9 years and was an avid golfer whose passion inspired him to found the Hawaii State Golf Association in 1984. His passion for golf and children was very much apparent throughout his life as he dedicated much of his time to both.
Ho’s passion wasn’t limited to just playing the game — he was once a 5-handicapper — he contributed to golf in every way possible. Besides serving as president of the HSGA and then as board director for the HSGA and the Hawai’i State Junior Golf Association, Ho was USGA regional director for 25 years, and president emeritus of the Pacific Coast Golf Association.
According to his family, Ho’s passion for golf can be summed up in an acceptance speech after being honored with the Aloha Section PGA Award in 2002: “When I took up the game of golf approximately 30 years ago it has been a venture which had led me to many gratifying experiences. It was like an obsession, a magical inexhaustible journey.”
Congratulations to both Lacey & Noah!
