HSJGA participants in the 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 age divisions will be playing in the final round of the 2011 Optimist International Junior Golf Competition in Palm Beach Gardens, FL tomorrow.

Boys 16-18 and Girls 15-18 will begin competition on July 26-31.

Congratulations to HSJGA Members Mariel Galdiano and Jino Sohn for their great performance on the mainland this past weekend in the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) event at Wigwam Golf Club in Lichfield Park, AZ.


Mariel (now 12 years old) won the Girls Division (Under 19 years old) by an impressive 10 strokes!  She also received the “low round belt buckle” for her one-under par 71.  She was the only female to finish under par with a two-under par total of 142.

Jino (now 14 years old) decided to play up into the Boys 15-19 Division, where they compete at a yardage of over 7,000 yards.  Despite competing with “the big boys”, Jino finished in Second Place, two shots back of the Champion.

Congratulations from all of us at the HSJGA!  Way to represent Hawaii and your association well!

A message from the Aloha Section PGA:

RE: Scholarship Opportunity

The Aloha Section PGA Foundation is pleased to announce its scholarship application is now available for high school seniors and current college students. We will be awarding one-year educational scholarships to outstanding individuals who have excelled in their academic achievements. The amount of scholarships will be determined by the availability of funds and amount of applicants.

The Aloha Section PGA Foundation is also pleased to announce a new scholarship opportunity for one high school senior to be eligible for a $20,000 scholarship to Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. This award is a $5,000 per year discount on the tuition at Methodist University.

Applications for the Scholarships must be returned to the Aloha Section PGA by Friday, March 25, 2011 at 5:00 PM (receipt date, not postmark date).

Congratulations to the amateurs who beat the pros for the fourth year in a row at the Gov. John A. Burns Challenge Cup, a Ryder Cup style tournament that was played at Mid-Pac Country Club.  The majority of the amateur team was composed of HSJGA members: Rudy Cabalar, Lorens Chan, Aaron Kunitomo and Seung Jae Maeng.  HSJGA alumni include TJ Kua, Matthew Ma and David Saka.
