Hawaii Teams Hold First and Second after Round One (1)

The Mary Cave Cup is a 36- hole team and individual completion named for the beloved Mary Cave, a consummate junior golf volunteer in Southern California for over 50 years.  Just to give you an idea how long Mary Cave was a volunteer, she was volunteering when Mary Bea was a junior golfer, now that is a really long time!

In first place after round one (1) is Hawaii Team #2 with team members Ciera Min from Hilo and Alice Kim from Honolulu with a Team Better-Ball score of 65. In a tie for second place with a Team Better Ball score of 67 is Hawaii Team #1 with Hee Sue Condry and Marissa Chow , both from Honolulu.

After round one (1) Ciera Min is leading the individual stroke play competition with a three (3) under par 69 followed by two Hawaii players at even par 72, Marissa Chow and Hee Sue Condry. Alice Kim is tied for sixth with a two over par 74 going into tomorrows final round.

Sixteen teams play their final round tomorrow, we will keep you posted!


Kunitomo shoots 73, finishes in tie for 8th place at Big ‘I’ tourney

CHESTERFIELD, N.J. –The Trusted Choice “BigI” National Championship was a 72-hole stroke play event hosted at Old York Country Club at Chesterfield. The tournament field boasted 102 boys and 54 girls, ages 12-18, from 35 states, with nine juniors representing the host state of New Jersey. Second-round cuts were made at 155 in the Boys Division and 159 in the Girls Division to include 55 boys and 27 girls for the third and final rounds.

Lahaina’s Aaron Kunitomo shot a 2-over 73 in the final round of the Trusted Choice Big ”I” National Championship on Friday, finishing in a tie for eighth place at Old York Country Club.

The Kamehameha Schools Maui student posted a four-round total of 8-over 292, nine shots behind winner Greg Bunner (70) of North Carolina.

California’s Cory McElyea (65) and Kentucky’s Will Bishop (65) tied for second at even par.

Fort Wayne, Indiana–Cassy Isagawa sealed a huge win at the 35th Junior PGA Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club today!  Cassy took the Championship title after a three (3) hole playoff this afternoon.  She has now earned a spot on the coveted Junior Ryder Cup team and will join some of the nations top juniors, including Alexis Thompson (last year’s Jr. PGA Championship winner), to compete in the team matches.

The Junior Ryder Cup will be held on September 27-28 at Gleneagle Resort’s PGA Centenary Course in Perthshire, SCOTLAND!!  This Ryder Cup format will be played by foursomes, mixed four ball and singles.

We would like to congratulate Ryan Kuroiwa of Aiea for being awarded the 2010 Homecare & Hospice First Tee Open exemption at Pebble Beach (August 30-September 5)!  The HSJGA received many outstanding applications and the decision was a very difficult one.  We are confident that Ryan will represent Hawaii and the HSJGA with much pride and honor.  Congratulations Ryan!

We are very excited to report that our Girls Junior America’s Cup Hawaii Team won by 3 strokes over Oregon in today’s final match at Morgan Run Resort and Club in San Diego!!!

Congratulations Alina Ching, Cassy Isagawa, Kacie Komoto, Cyd Okino and team captain Cathy Torchiana for such an outstanding accomplishment and for representing Hawaii and the HSJGA so well!

We couldn’t be more proud of you!!

We did not forget our Boys Junior America’s Cup Hawaii Team who did a stupendous job this week.  Our boys finished 13th and played with some of the best boys the nation!

Great job Alex Chiarella, Justin Chu, Michael Fan, Ryan Kuroiwa and team captain Rick Castillo!  We are very proud to have had you represent Hawaii and the HSJGA in New Mexico!!

Girl’s Travel Stipend Application Instructions

Any girl or woman golfer from Hawaii who has represented Hawaii in a USGA championship may apply for a travel stipend from the Hawaii State Women’s Golf Foundation.

  • If you are a junior golfer*, submit this application after you have played in the championship.
  • If you are not a junior golfer, this form and the Application for Reimbursement of Tournament Expenses available for download  from the USGA website (www.usga.org) should be submitted to:

  • Use a separate application for each stipend you apply.
  • The deadline for submitting all applications is September 30th of each year.  Each application will be reviewed by the grant committee and submitted to the Board of Directors for approval at the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors held in October.
  • Upon approval, HSWGF Travel stipends awarded to junior golfers will be sent directly to them.
  • Upon approval, HSWGF Travel stipends awarded to those who are not junior golfers will be sent to the Hawaii State Golf Association and they will send checks to the recipients accordingly.

*A junior golfer is an amateur golfer who has not reached (1) the September following graduation from secondary school, or (2) her 19th birthday, whichever comes first.

Junior Golf Travel Stipend for Boys –U.S. Junior Amateur

Purpose:

To encourage and provide financial aid for qualifiers to the U.S. JUNIOR AMATEUR.  The Foundation emphasizes the importance of etiquette, integrity, responsibility, and fair play – values that make golf the special game that we know, love and learn from throughout our lives.

Eligibility Process:

  • Open to all male Junior Golfers who qualify to play in the U.S. Junior Amateur
  • Resident of the State of Hawaii
  • Must be an upstanding citizen of the community

Amount of Award:

  • Not to exceed $500 per qualifier

Application Process: receipt

  • Complete application
  • Enclose a copy of the completed Tournament Entry Form
  • Mail in as soon as possible

Selection Process:

  • Sectional qualifying results
  • Tournament Participation
