HSJGA Board Member since the HSJGA was established in 1999, avid golfer and devoted service man, Dr. Richard Ho, passed away on May 14, 2009 at the age of 82. Dr. Ho, a retired pediatrician, will be remembered as a patient and passionate man who dedicated much of his time to the golf world and to the well -being of juniors across the state.
Dr. Ho was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Inaugural Aloha Section PGA Ho’olaulea Awards earlier this year. Some of his many accomplishments include helping to establish the Hawaii State Golf Association in 1984, serving as the USGA regional director for 25 years and serving as president emeritus of the Pacific Coast Golf Association.
“I was very happy and very fortunate to meet Dr. Ho for the first time last month at an HSJGA Board meeting on Oahu. He was such a sweet man and very kind hearted. It was obvious how much he cared for the junior golfers of Hawaii”, said Lauren Yama.
Dr. Ho recently filled out a questionnaire created by the HSJGA office staff. The questionnaire asked interview style questions and is intended for a “Meet the Board Members” section of the website that is currently under construction. When asked what he enjoyed the most about serving on the Board, he responded with:
“To know so many fine people who have welcomed me into the fold. I had been in touch with junior golf long before the origin of HSJGA and I know how much the HSJGA has finally gotten things together into a unified workable body. I am proud to be a part of it today, along with all of the alliances that have come about with our golf associations”.
Dr. Ho’s passing is a huge loss for the Hawaii golf community, but his kind spirit and love of golf and kids will always be remembered.

2009 Handbook Revision
CLARIFICATION OF CRITERIA TO EARN AN INVITATION TO THE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
From the inception of the HSJGA, it has been the intention of the Board of Directors to set very high criteriato qualify for the Tournament of Champions as a reward for great play.
New situations arise that we never contemplate. By adding a new age division this year, we have the possibility of having less than three players in an age division. Effective immediately, the Board of Directors has voted to make the following change to the handbook. (Anyone who has qualified prior to this change will not be affected)
This document supersedes the 2009 handbook as follows:
In order for a junior to receive an invitation to the Tournament of Champions, a junior must meet all the criteria set forth.
1.He/she must be the two-day winner for a Junior Tour Series (JTS) or any tournament listed on page 41 of the 2009 HSJGA Handbook.
2.He/she must score within 10 stokes of the scoring guidelines for his/her age group for each of the rounds.
3.There must be at least three players competing in the flight and a minimum of two players must finish all rounds of the tournament.
Points and trophies will be awarded regardless of the number playing the flight.

IJGT - New Exemption Application Process
Good news! The HSJGA will now have ten National Minority Golf Foundation spots (an increase of 2) for the 2009 International Junior Golf Tour events. These spots are awarded to the top five boys and top five girls of HSJGA’s final 2008 13 -14 year old points standings.
Entry via the NMGF means that IJGT’s $225 membership fee is waived and entry fees are discounted (amount of discount depends on event). All entry fees include range balls prior to the round, the tournament rounds of golf, lunch after each round except for TPC Tampa Bay, 1 dozen golf balls provided by TaylorMade, and other gift items from the IJGT and sponsors.
Congratulations to the following top 5 girl and boy juniors: Cassy Isagawa, Marissa Chow, Kalea Heu, Alina Ching, Nani Yagi, Aaron Kunitomo, Alex Chiarella, Kalena Preus, Ryan Kuroiwa, and Zachary Braunthal.
HSJGA has 1 boy and 1 girl NMGF spot in each of the following events:
Reynolds Plantation, Feb. 20-22, Greensboro, GA
Temecula Creek Inn, Feb. 27-March 1, Temecula, CA
Duke University, Feb. 27-March 1, Durham, NC
Moreno Valley Ranch, March 20-22, Moreno Valley, CA
TPC Tampa Bay, March 27-29, Tampa, FL
The Legends at Parris Island, April 3-5, Parris Island, SC
Wigwam Resort & Spa, April 10-12, Phoenix, AZ
This year, those spots will be filled by the top 10 juniors on a first come, first served basis. Here is the new entry procedure:
The top 10 juniors will be emailed entry forms for all of the above events. As soon as the juniors receive the forms, they can begin submitting their entries to IJGT – it does not matter what their position is in the points standings. They will all have an equal chance at applying for the two spots in all of the above events.
Juniors will submit their entries and payments directly to Mark Plevyak, IJGT’s Director of Member Service as soon as possible. The names of the top 5 boy and girl players have been submitted to him. Although the HSJGA has 2 NMGF spots in each event, the tournament field is filled on a first come, first served basis. Thus, if the field is filled before IJGT receives the NMGF entry form from HSJGA’s juniors, the spots are lost.
IJGT must receive entries for the spots 6 weeks prior to the event or the spot(s) will be taken back from the HSJGA and awarded to other juniors. This applies even if the field is not filled at that time.
The juniors will also be emailed the National Minority Golf Foundation biography form. They need to complete the form and submit it to NMGF (contact info is on form). These bios are kept on file and are made available to college coaches.
Juniors are subject to the consequences listed in the HSJGA handbook should they enter via NMGF spot and then withdraw from the event.
